Three days had passed since the article, or four. Joel had stopped checking the date.

The kitchen had changed. The counter next to the sink had collected cans, tuna and beans, opened with the manual can opener because the electric one required the kitchen outlet and the kitchen outlet was still dead. The power cord from the hallway still ran across the linoleum. A spoon sat in one of the bean cans. The beans were gone. The spoon remained.
