Joel had a whiteboard.

He had taken it from Conference Room D, which nobody used on Thursdays because the HVAC ran hot and the room smelled like adhesive from a carpet repair that had never fully cured. The whiteboard was the small portable kind, on wheels, with a crack in the lower left corner and a faded ghost of someone’s product roadmap underneath whatever Joel wrote on it. He had rolled it into his office, which was not an office but a desk and a partition and twelve square feet of carpet that qualified as an office only in the sense that Joel was in it.
