Tuesday night Joel ran E-1 through E-8. Someone had left a cardigan on the back of a chair three desks over. It was maroon. It had been there since at least Monday. Wednesday night he ran E-9 through E-16. Thursday night he ran E-17 through E-24 and the vending machine on the fifth floor made the clunking sound it made every forty minutes and Joel timed it at thirty-seven and wrote this in his notebook because the alternative was writing what he actually felt about the data, and feelings did not have a column in the spreadsheet.
The C-series had tested for surprise detection. The D-series had tested for self-report accuracy. The E-series was asking the model to do things that required knowing what it was doing while it was doing it.
